Many people believe that all they need to do to learn magic is to read these books and figure it out for themselves. They don't believe they need anyone else to work with or to teach them, least of all by joining an Order. This is simply not the case. So, why would an occultist need to join a Golden Dawn Order? The truth is that we learn the best by having an organized approach to learning, and a GD teacher is going to follow the regular curriculum, and hopefully they will be accommodating to the new members' questions. A good teacher will even be able to help the student fill some gaps in their knowledge. There aren't many academic courses taught on the occult, although this is changing. The occult may seem like something a new reader can figure out on their own, but I can guarantee they will not get very far without a teacher. For an autodidact to put together their own curriculum isn't rare. The problem with this is that they usually don't know the right material to research, and if they do get their hands on the right material, they won't know the right questions to ask. Someone who is self-taught can easily waste a few years struggling with the material, years that could have been saved if they had worked a basic syllabus from a reputable source and a proper teacher. Even more amusing is when a new occultist starts their own Order. It can be done, but usually it is a case of the blind leading the blind. In certain rare cases an individual will succeed in starting a group, but it usually fizzles out in a couple years due to lack of direction. The truth is that someone must already be an Adept in magic before they can train others. Right?

Now some students may claim that working alone is their learning style, and perhaps they are right. But, not seeking advice when starting a journey of this magnitude just smacks of a tender ego on the part of the student. Good Orders provide the best generalized education and experience for a new student to learn from. Any Neophyte who spends a few years applying themselves in an Order will gain the occult version of a liberal arts degree. Many of us won't learn just through reading books, but by doing. But joining an Order is more than just servicing the beginner's educational preference. Magic is a practice, and it is only learned by practicing it. A teacher can cut away confusion in a short time, sometimes saving years of frustration for the student. Having like-minded people to work with can also produce magical results that we might not have been able to accomplish by working alone. There is also a social side to occultism, and many occultists feel disconnected from regular society due to their interests. Having an occult or magical community around us can make a huge difference when we have questions, are looking for magical support, or seeking fellowship and fraternity.

Now there is a benefit to working alone. Sometimes an Adept needs to cloister themselves for various magical workings, especially the solitary theurgic practices. All of this is way above the grade level of an actual beginner. For some reason people confuse what we do later in our career with what we need to do as a beginner. For example, the requisite knowledge in the Outer Order includes basic practices such as the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram, how to make Holy Water, how to speak with intention, how to conduct yourself in a ceremony, and in some temples the preliminary instructions on how to chant or vibrate the holy names of G-d. Meanwhile the Adept has a number of private practices they may wish to do, for example, the Lesser Key of Solomon, aspects of the Heptameron, the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage and other solitary theurgic practices. However, even an Adept will call upon other magicians for assistance, whether in Grimoire practice, such as the Greater Key of Solomon, or in the regular workings of a temple of the mysteries. But, new students can easily be romanced away from focussing on basic learning by tales of how everything important that a magician does should be done alone, and that being part of a group is somehow less spiritual than doing solo work, that they are already advanced without needing to try, etc, etc. I don't know if it is an inflated ego that makes beginners think that they don't need anyone else to learn from, or if it is bad advice they are receiving from other magicians, but there is a real disconnect here. The reality of most beginners is that they jump in head first without knowing much about the practice. They should be spending years learning, practicing and enjoying magic before they decide to tackle Adept apotheosis-level magic. A beginner needs to realize that a real Adept is really just someone who has mastered the basics. After they reach this higher level, the Adept continues practicing the same basics each day anyways. When they mature into a mature Adept, they may decide to go back to the beginning of it all and start to teach others.

There are prominent voices in the magical community that warn new students against joining Orders. They recommend doing everything as a solitary. Perhaps they had a bad experience in an Order, and are genuinely trying to help new students by warning them away from repeating their own mistakes. This is perfectly understandable, as that was their experience. However, not all groups are going to be bad, there are good and not-so-good Orders. It is important to do your research on a group before joining it. Check their reputation from more than one source before leaping into membership. In my experience, the strongest opponents of Orders seem to have forgotten that they first learned the basics from a teacher or an Order. They don't recognize the real value their teacher or Order provided them with when they needed some guidance.

SOME MAGICAL ORDERS DON'T TEACH MAGIC?

There are also so-called Orders that do not offer any classes or education in magic. In this regard the nay-sayers against Orders are right to warn people away from them. These fringe Orders try to copy the model of Freemasonry, which is a good Order, but they fail to get it right.

Now Freemasonry isn't an occult organization, but it is regularly used by other occult groups as a filter to find good candidates. An example of a reputable occult Order that uses Freemasonry like this is the SRIA, which requires you to already be a Master Mason before you may join it. SRIA is very clear what it is, and is not. It is primarily a research body, everyone does papers to go up grades. There are grade ceremonies, and the practical work is on your own time.

So these fringe organizations are partly designed as filter Orders for something else. Some of these modern Gnostic groups and churches set-up themselves up somewhat like Freemasonry, and are used to attract members for their internal organizations. Becoming a congregant in these types of churches are usually a good place to make friends. However, their plan is for the congregants to continue with lay membership, get them to apply for a basic Order, start paying dues or higher dues, apply to go up in degrees, get them to apply to become part of the priesthood, etc. However, they still haven't learned any magic. Sooner or later they find out that they might have to join yet another organization inside the first one that will finally teach them some magic. To be fair, many years can be spent going down the rabbit hole of occult societies' degrees and grades without making much spiritual progress, and without learning the very first thing one came for - which is to learn magic. Before joining anything, it is important to ask if there is any education and training offered, at which point in the system are certain things taught, how long the average initiate spends in each grade, and how long the courses will take them to get to an intermediate or advanced level. I have often seen people looking for Golden Dawn, but accidentally or haphazardly join something else be cause it has a Lodge or temple closer by. Unfortunately some of these "options" aren't really options at all, because they are antithetical to the student's original goals. We can't rely on these organizations to be honest with their applicants. An ethical organization would redirect their applicants to the right tradition that fits their needs. But, some of these groups are scrounging around for new members, and they will take whoever they can get. Again, beginner's don't know what to do with themselves, what to read it what to ask about, so joining the wrong tradition or Order actually happens quite frequently. Asking the questions above will help the student to figure out on their own if the group really is what they are looking for.

SOME PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS HAVE DIFFICULTIES WORKING WITH OTHERS

I did want to add a few more points in regards to those of us who have joined an Order, but had a difficult time with the people in it, or were disappointed with the education or even the lack of education they received.

It's natural that there will be personality clashes, there's not much one can do about that, other than try to be diplomatic. Some people are good at diplomacy, and some are not. It helps to remember that diplomacy is not just how we present ourselves, it can also be the patience we show when others are not being diplomatic! Luckily for most people, diplomacy can be learned over time.

Occultists are by nature eccentric, and at times we can be difficult to work with. One factor that adds to disagreements is the sheer amount of time we spend together. After a while each other's little quirks can grow to become annoying. Compare this to the time we spend with our own families. Some people see their extended family often, but most of us don't see those other family members that often, unfortunately by choice. Compare this to a fraternity that meets once or twice a month. Sometimes a temple will offer classes, so if we include those nights, some temples get together as much as once or twice a week. This amounts to a lot of time spent with each other. Some see their temple members more often than "date night" with their significant other, which can cause trouble at home too. With so much time being spent together in the temple, it's no wonder that there can be disagreements between people. It's quite easy to get emotional and mix up the difference between the fraternity we belong to and our own family dynamics from childhood. This psychological projection not something that we are usually aware of, and like many of life's lessons, it first comes up subconsciously. For those of us who grew up in a nice family, projection can be a good thing, but for many of us with poor or difficult upbringings, it isn't necessarily such a good thing. How our behaviour affects others is something we all need to watch for, and when we are acting from a difficult place within ourselves, it might be us and not the other person that is causing the trouble in the group!

Another factor that can cause difficulties in a temple is how important the work can become to each of us. At first this might seem like a good thing, and it is, but it can also cause issues between people. Having strong feelings about how the temple should function, whether that is financially or in regards to how the ceremonies should be presented can bring up all sorts of issues between people. Just remember, if people are speaking up about their concerns, it means they care. The problem arises when others don't listen to each other, or don't have good boundaries around what is appropriate. All we can really do is try to control ourselves, and avoid the behavior we find so abhorrent in others. In a group we soon learn that when we take office, we each have a different style of presenting our parts. Trying to control how another person does the ritual or delivers their lines is not appropriate. Just focus on your own work and leave the stage direction to the Director of Ceremonies or Past Hierophant, it is their job! Hopefully they can work with each officer, and balance the group to help bring out the best performance that each officer has to offer.

YES, THERE ARE BAD ORDERS OUT THERE

Finally, there are bad teachers and groups out there. The world is full of people who are waiting to cause trouble. There are narcissists, sociopaths, etc. This isn't different in a magical Order. But for some reason there are just a few more folks with personality disorders in spiritual or religious groups, and Orders aren't really different from regular religions in this regard. People with personality disorders seem to gravitate to leadership positions where students or seekers are more vulnerable. Students just need to keep their radar on and defenses up. If it seems like someone might be a bad person, trust your instinct and stay away from them and their group.

CROWDSOURCING YOUR INITIATION

I want to return again to the question of why joining a Golden Dawn Order is helpful. New people sometimes believe that everything can be found online, and that any questions they have can be picked up by asking around online forums. Magic is not something that can be taught from an online video like changing a car tire or making a special dinner recepie. The internet is a great resource for information. But, no reasonable person believes they can completely crowd-source their own post-secondary education online. So why is it that some of us believe that they can crowd-source their initiations online? We do need experienced teachers who can take us through the curriculum in an organized way. Now there are excellent forums online where a massive amount of information is available. However, groups on theurgy or Golden Dawn are generally more helpful to people who are already familiar with the tradition. They are not usually helpful to beginners, so unless you are dutifully following the same agreed-upon curriculum as everyone else, these groups may not be as helpful as a beginner might think.

The real problem with autodidactic learning is that when we are beginners we don't usually know what the pitfalls are until we fall into them, nor do we know how to formulate the right questions, much less find the answers. Sure, we can ask others who are present in various online groups for help, but after 30 years of magical practice I can say without hesitation that there are very few posts and replies online that contain the right information. At best you can only cull tidbits of knowledge here and there, but most replies to questions are usually fruitless speculation.

Let's say that we do find a knowledgeable occultist online who will answer a few questions, and there are a few of them out there. They usually won't take a personal interest in you. In public they tend to discuss only magical history rather than practice. Usually experienced magicians are just presenting a helpful public persona to introduce themselves to would-be students. They aren't going to discuss personal magical or spiritual experiences in a public forum. Very rarely are these personalities interested in training people for free or sharing the most important information on practice over public groups. Most often these types of teachers are only online as an intake strategy so they can offer their own classes or to try and get you to join their Order. There is nothing wrong with this! They have their own offerings, and either you can join signup with them, or join something else's thing. But, and it's a big but, you won't get a proper education by picking up the tiny drizzle of information they strategically left out as advertising for their course or group. Just because they don't state in public that they offer classes or membership in an Order, doesn't mean they don't. You just need to send them an instant message, and I'm pretty sure they will sign you up for their "secret Order". We should never think that "cherry-picking" some random questions from these experienced types publically online will be a substitute for a properly administered curriculum. All you are doing is pestering them, and misleading yourself. To obtain a comprehensive level of teaching, again, you usually have to join an Order or find a dedicated teacher. It's better if you join an Order that has a local group, or a teacher who can meet with you in person, otherwise you have to travel, which is a pretty regular requirement when there is no temple near you.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Just be careful what teacher or Order you affiliate yourself with. Magic or theurgy is a very spiritual endeavor, and when we do it we open ourselves up and are vulnerable, especially at first. There are lots of people out there who pretend to be knowledgeable, but are really just posturing. Like I already mentioned, many people in the regular world have personality disorders, so it is easily possible to have a teacher or join an Order that is run by one of them. When these types of hurtful people are in positions of power, they can cause their students even more damage than an uninitiated person would because of how vulnerable their magical students are. Finding good teachers who are willing to establish a long-term relationship with a student is rare, and anyone who seems wise should be checked out thoroughly before you begin taking their classes or joining their Order.

THE BEST APPROACH IS TO JOIN AN ORDER

The best approach for the beginner has always been to join a reputable magical Order. I recommend the Hermetic Society of the Golden Dawn, but I am biased! You may or may not be a good fit with us, but that's just how life is sometimes. Most people seeking the Golden Dawn are quite satisfied with our Order. We have a solid curriculum, and groups all around the world, which means the travel isn't usually too far to go. It's designed so that you can work through our material in an organized fashion, and connect with a more experienced initiate in the Order who is willing to take you under their wing and train you properly. There is just no substitute for quality, no matter how remarkable we may think we are! 😉

https://goldendawn.ning.com

Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-19571135350802773822017-04-06T02:59:00.001-07:002017-04-06T03:56:14.442-07:00GOLDEN DAWN AS FRINGE MASONRY

I was just remarking to a friend about the comparison of The Golden Dawn to Freemasonry. For many of us, there seem to be a lot of pagan influences in GD, which is an interesting turn of events considering paganism was revived from prominent GD members such as Fortune, Crowley, Yeats and Mathers. However, if you look to Masonic sources, orders like OTO and The Golden Dawn are referred to as "fringe-masonry". While this is often intended to be a pejorative, because these orders do not "make masons", their point that the modern lodge or magical temple structure comes from Freemasonry is well taken. But then again, a number of institutions and legal structures also derive from Freemasonry, such as Robert's Rules of Order, the proceedings of the House of Commons in my native country of Canada and in various other governments around the world. My understanding is that masonic by laws (bye-laws) were what the Canadian Provinces used as the model for non-profit societies, a bit of influential law still very much in use today. I can only assume a similar process may have occurred in the formation of not-for-profit laws in other countries, but as an occultist, this is going beyond my area of expertise.

Historical reviews of the proto-elements that came together in The Golden Dawn and movements which came after the GD make an interesting study. Whether we are talking about masonic lodges as the basis for the GD temple (lodge) structure, or Windsor paints influencing GD colour magic, there are a number of constituting elements that come together to make The Golden Dawn, we can not accurately attribute it to only one source. I like seeing what Crowley wrote for the ceremonies in his later orders, which were written in the early 1900's after his involvement in The Golden Dawn and exposure to other fringe-masonic orders. A lot of insight can be gleamed examining what is similar and different in these various traditions. For example, in my opinion we can see that Crowley was likely using Ancient Freemasonry or the first three degrees of Scottish Rite to put together the OTO scripts. One example is because the prayers are always given at the Altar or coming toward the Altar in the early degrees of OTO, which is a feature uncommon in masonry - other than in the Ancient work, where the prayer is also at the Altar (and not the door to the lodge).

I also find that looking at what
Emulation Freemasonry contributed to the GD is a good starting point.
Internal hallmarks in the ceremonies include the verbiage, blocking and
stage directions. In some places we find even the later changes between
The Golden Dawn and Stella Matutina ceremonies are influenced by
elements of Freemasonry again. Meanwhile, we can see that it was Emulation Freemasonry that informed the writer or writers of the Golden Dawn. One example is that unlike the stout Altar in the Ancient Work, the Emulation and GD Altars are both in the form of a double-cube. Another example is the aforementioned prayers in OTO and Ancient Freemasonry instead become redacted versicles offered at the door to the GD Hall, while in Emulation Freemasonry, the prayers are also given between the pillars when the Candidate is at or near the door. (However, this is not a perfect comparison, because the ever-innovative GD then provides a later Altar prayer in the Neophyte Ceremony which uses some of the verbiage of the aforementioned masonic prayers.)

While being familiar with other systems can make one a well rounded occultist, that doesn't mean that I recommend chucking a square and compass on the altar besides the cross and triangle in a GD temple. They are very different orders with different purposes. GD is a magical college, while masonry is exclusively fraternal and charitable. The same thing goes for mixing Thelema or any other magical traditions in with the GD work, such as folk magic or voodoo. It is just a bad blend, for just as the cosmetic similarities with freemasonry do not suddenly make GD masonic, what makes the various magical systems and religions different are actually key incompatibilities. These are serious distinctions, regardless if they both use psalms or there are similar verbiage or timing of where to give a prayer in a ceremony.

For example, Crowley seemed to make an modus operandi of inverting every symbol to its "evil" position, and then making these symbols now become good in his new system of Thelema. My favorite examples of this are taking the supernal triangle from the Neophyte sash, and using it in a way that GD adepts would interpret it as the inverted triangle of evil, but then it suddenly becomes the holy child Ra Hoor Khuit on the robe of the AA Neophyte. He selects negative numerology, such as the GD qlippotic 11, which suddenly becomes "11 is the number of magick' in Thelema. It is like Thelema is a tantric or Hindu left hand path version of The Golden Dawn. In my meditations on it, I wonder if Crowley was actually attempting to
terrorize the older occultists of his day by exclusively making use of
this symbolism. The Golden Dawn seems to be working a redemptive formula through self-sacrifice, divine petitioning and prayer, while Thelema tends towards self-transformation through action. While I have learned much from investigating both systems, this is not really a good blend of philosophies or energies to be placed in one temple.

In the 20th century, it seemed that the common approach to magic was inherently synthetic. What eventually was labelled as post-modernism, seems to have hit the innovators of the occult early, creating these massive hybrid systems of magic, like GD and Thelema. But nothing can stay static forever, and looking to the future we have to ask ourselves, what can possibly come after post-modernism that can qualify as a movement powerful enough to take its place? In the modern "post post-modern age", my opinion as to how these ceremonies will be enacted in the 21st century has changed. What I am jokingly describing as "post post-modernism" seems to be an approach to authentically recreate a time and a place. This is true in new clothing styles as well as local cuisine, the cutting edge today seems to be an attempt to recreate a time period as genuinely and properly as possible.

This has been true in GD for some time now. The newer ceremonial temples are authentically working ceremonies that are dated from a certain time, with period handmade pieces of art, old scripts and an attempt to understand the attitudes that may have been the context of the time they hale from. Like their predecessors, these occultists know that magic is a living and growing culture, and must change to survive. But unlike the previous generation of post-modern magicians, the solution is not to let every idea or additional similar but alien approaches into the temple in some kind of universal stew of magic. Believe it or not, the "post post-modern" preference is to work within a certain limited framework, and rigorously exclude various ideas and influences that are not present in the original context. Gone are the days where the trickster coyote is solemnly proclaimed to be similar to the mercantile Hermes, or new age magicians stick quartz crystals on top of their GD lotus wands. It is ironic, because it is often argued that the New Age, Astrology, Thelema and Wicca owe their new popularity or revival to The Golden Dawn. Nonetheless, the current trend of the last ten years or more has been to try and understand magic in its original context first, without being influenced or even damaged by alien ideas being re-inserted back into The Golden Dawn from New Age teachings, Thelema or Wicca. This is not just in The Golden Dawn, for Solomonic practitioners are also experiencing some fulfillment with this approach as well.

While I find myself very much in sympathy with this more nuanced modern approach, it does bring in a new set of unexpected problems that we must face. A perusal of the original documents will show that while the Outer Order ceremonies were always scripted, there appears to have been a high degree of flexibility to the early Inner Order rituals of the Golden Dawn. Therefore, if the modern temples are to do this authentically, we have to be careful not to rigidly apply one possible script when we could appropriately write our own, or trying to make an impossible copy of details or features shown in the older ink drawings of the wooden tools. Certain invocations and traditions that seem set in stone by the SM time period (as revealed print by Regardie) had actually started off as an instruction to compose one's own invocation using a set of sephirotic or planetary names. At some point during the process of journal copying leading up to the publication of the first SM ceremonies by Aries Press in the 1930's we lost this flexibility and the inner order system became entrenched in one set of consecration scripts. Overly rigid searching for source materials when the originals instruct
us to compose our own, or literalism in constructing what is essentially a
painted magic dowel can eventually skew our impression of what the old late 1800's GD order
really was - a tradition in the midst of an intellectual and creative
growth spurt.

Looking at kabbalah in the 1600's, we find a similar creative phenomenon. It was an intense period of growth for Jewish Mysticism, and in his Kabbalah, Scholem points out that it was a very innovative time for the subject. He cites a number of ideas and influences from Neoplatonic and other sources. Meanwhile, in the later, post-messianic time-period, eventually we find the Hassidic movement beginning by hearkening back to the 1600's as the most authentic for the subject of Kabbalah. No problem there, but in practice, the 15 and 1600's were treated as a fixed orthodoxy. As much as I like the Hassidus, this is not what the history books teach, the 1600's were far more creative and flexible.

While I am not an anthropologist, but rather a practitioner or occultist, I have heard similar remarks made about the oral tradition of some indigenous peoples. As I understand it, these traditions (in some cases spanning thousands of years) have been treated as a fixed source, but only after their publication. With Native American traditions, it is a really strange turn of events when those whose task and vocation was to promote the oral tradition now seem to prefer to fall back on the books of academics to tell them what their tradition really was. This, I feel, could be the chief danger in our new, though laudable, "post post-modernist" approach. We simply have too many books, and not all of them are correct. A study of our original materials show that there was apparently a vitality and flexibility in the Inner Order of the GD that had itself halted somewhere along the way. When we mix in other traditions, it can provide some innovation, but with the previous thirty years of people introducing crystals and too many other elements into the GD Hall, we are promoting a lack of certainty of what exactly the tradition is. Yes, there are common elements in different traditions. However, there are also differences, and I am not always certain our newest initiates really understand the distinction. We need to get back to the original approach, and this was limited to study of the right information, and continued practice. Now, I give some examples of similarities with Freemasonry, but then distinctions are drawn where the similarities end. This might be par for the course in an academic setting, but this is not always the methodology of the practitioner, who tends to prize utility of the moment over correct procedure and historiography. The Golden Dawn, while innovative in its day, never included wholesale adoption of these alien traditions into the order based on overly simplified but cursory similarities to the GD work. There is a limit to how far we can compare various traditions before we begin to lose resolution entirely.

However, the order did include a wider education in proto-source material, including but not limited to Freemasonry, Theosophy, Astrology, the Lurianic Kabbalah, Rosicrucianism, and the Corpus Hermeticum. This is what the order I am from is involved in, promoting education of the traditional forms of magic, without allowing adulteration by a "stew-pot" mentality towards comparative religion, which tends to obscure the unique differences between them. For more information, feel free to investigate further at www.goldendawn.ning.com

So, even though I see a potential for over-rigidity as a concern, I also am excited for what the future may hold. For me the solution is to try and stay loose in areas that won't damage the original paradigm. We should feel free to write our own inner order invocations, but continue using traditional names and attributes. We should make and thoroughly work with a set of traditional tools, but after a time, go ahead and make another new set for personal use using different colours, shapes, or even other sephiroth. Try using different sets of the traditional divine names. Do not initiate others with personal tools or unique ideas, always fall back on the traditional system as we have a responsibility to pass on the tradition as authentically as possible. However, do be confident to go ahead and innovate in your own personal work, for that is how we will grow and learn as a tradition for the future.

Over the years, there has been a variety of cross-pollination
between the various traditions of Western Goetia, Evocation, Voodoo, and
Hoodoo. Particularly interesting is the use of veves in Voodoo, a practice which we can attribute to Spanish Catholics exposing the
African Americans to Goetia in the 1600's and 1700's. Santeria makes
use of statues of Catholic Saints to represent its African gods. In
ancient Greece, there is the theurgic tradition of using statues as
well. Within these temples or shrines, the effigies were said to move
and speak to the faithful. (Jake Stratton-Kent examines this in his excellent 2
volume work, Geosophia.)

Many years ago, I came up with the idea to work in a similar manner
as in Santaria, but rather with classical Greek and Roman statuary. It
would be challenging and prohibitively expensive to make a statue for each spirit or angel I had
ever worked with, but this is what I
wanted to do. Meditating on the idea, I came up with a solution, which
was that I would only make seven statues, one for each planet.

What makes the Inner Order of the Golden Dawn system different from other older traditions,
is the introduction of modular tools. In the Golden Dawn, (or more
correctly, the RR et AC tradition), certain flashing colours are
employed to represent planetary and other astrological forces. For
example, the Adept can use the Lotus Wand to invoke the astrological
forces via the coloured bands or grips. If I was to make up statues of
the planets, I could use them to invoke the various gods, angels and
spirits, but in a modular fashion. For example, all the Venusian
characters, such as YHVH Tzabaoth, Hanael, Kedemial, Astarte, Aphrodite,
etc., could be invoked in a theurgic manner into a statue of Venus as a
material basis.

There first problem with this new formula was that I wanted to be
able to use it for seal-based evocations as well as theurgy and the
sigils would result in concentrating the sephirotic or planetary
energies too specifically into certain names, which I knew would result
in mildly kelipotic manifestations when I tried to switch pantheons. In
the old order, some of the Adepti experimented with making a second set
of elemental tools but without sigils, so I made the assumption that by
extension these statues could also be left somewhat plain, to
accommodate a variety of names for the one force being employed. This
overcame my first concern.

The second problem is the cleansing of the statue between
entities. Thankfully, the Inner Order Z2 for evocation presents a
highly effective license to depart and then banishing formula that
doesn't appear elsewhere in magical literature.

Depicted above is a photo of one of the deities I have worked with. It is a
statue of Venus, after the Botticelli painting. For more information,

definitely such a book. Within its pages we find a new depth to old
topics we have not seen considered in print before, and it offers
previously unpublished documents that show a slightly different
method of how the rituals could have been worked. There is also a
commentary by the author that threads its way through each section
that is both interesting and provocative. So, this volume provides a
variety of content, and I am of the opinion that it will make a
valuable addition for any serious magical library, being a must for
anyone studying or practising Golden Dawn magic.

starts
with a section on the history of Samuel Liddell "MacGregor"
Mathers, Golden Dawn co-founder, and Chief of his later GD off-shoot
which he renamed the Rosicrucian Order of the Alpha et Omega, or AO
for short. An important quality of the book is its historical
approach. It has not been composed with the methodology or rigorous
standards of history, anthropology; but rather from the
magico-psychological perspective of a practitioner of the Golden Dawn
tradition. Any brief perusal of its pages shows that it indeed dances
between speculation on the psychology of Mathers, and the facts of
various detailed historical events; all of which is informed by the
knowledge and consideration of magical theory from the perspective of
an operative magician. As magic does not yet have its own
characteristic methodology or discipline, the book does not require
itself to operate under the rigorous standards of another field of
study; and the finished product takes advantage of this latitude.
What it is, is a magical book written under the auspices of the
Golden Dawn tradition; it is an internal history of GD magic written
by a magician, for magicians.

in
a different category from the other extant works of GD history. While
some other works demean the practical side of the subject, and others
are written from a clearly demarcated historical perspective, King
is
accepting of the magical world-view, and takes a personal approach.
All of the above are acceptable positions in my own opinion,
depending on the author’s relationship to the historical material.
Even the kindest scholarly representations of GD history have been
penned carefully to avoid any discussion of the internal and
transformative reasons for practising the tradition; in short, they
are carefully written to avoid any discussion of magic.

not unlike other very popular books on Alternative History and
Freemasonry in particular; such as the prolific publications of
Knight and Lomas. Like these other books of Alternative History, King
Over the Water indeed
shares a similar, more casual, writing style. I did notice the use of
the common vernacular was consistent throughout the book, and that
the same cultural idioms that were oft-repeated. Some of these
slang phrases were unfamiliar to me, and in places I found that a bit
difficult to follow. As I progressed past the introduction, I grew
accustomed to the style of presentation, which was more
conversational and informative than the dry academic reading that I
am more used to, and was actually expecting from this book. There was
also a dour and surprisingly humorous quality to the content that I
fancy will catch a few of the more serious amongst us a little
off-guard. I quickly settled into reading King
Over
the

began to enjoy the content immensely.

I
agree with most of the conclusions and suggestive interpretations
made about Mr. Mathers in these pages. I found the assessments of his
faults and strengths to be accurate assumptions, and I was surprised
how King
Over the Water actually
mirrored some of my own speculative opinions closely. In many
cases this amounts to an undignified look at Mathers, but it is not
necessarily an unwarranted characterisation, for at times there were
indeed very foolish or unsavoury tales that must be told in order for
the book to fulfil its stated objective as a historical work. In
essence, it was a life story that was at times difficult for me to
hear and discover portions of as a reader and GD aficionado, and a
few times I found myself wincing at some of the stories. However,
I recognise that the candidness was warranted and provided a most
honest picture of the man. In this regard, and most importantly, I
found the book's information to be detailed and accurate, and in my
opinion the assessment of Mathers’ personality was fair, astute,
well-thought out and reasonably communicated. The addition of the
detailed obituary by John William Brodie-Innes is of course priceless
and well-placed at the end of the book. Because as he was a close
associate of Mathers, its fond and lengthy characterisation serves to
confirm much of this book's main hypothesis about Mathers
personality; all the while soothing out some of our impressions of
his foibles with the kindness that a good friendship and long
association can sometimes bring between two men.

The
book recognises that in any lay person's psychological analysis it is
hard to be certain of conclusions such as this with anyone, even with
ourselves, and much less with a long-since deceased person. At the
same time, the book does not shy away from some of its more difficult
descriptions about Mathers. This is a position I respect, for going
back to my characterisation of the book's approach as
'magico-philosophical', in modern GD practise this level of
self-conscious consideration should be present in the work of every a
magician, and encouraging this open analysis is an important process
to undergo personally as well as when considering the possible
motives of others. In this regard, I heartily appreciated the
attempts to interject only the right amount of uncertainty into the
research being presented, and in this an academic method is emulated.
This has the very much desired effect of rendering the new
interpretations presented in King
Over the Water as
more plausible. For those of us in other areas of expertise who are
perhaps unused to reading or participating in this sort of academic
work, I would kindly share or volunteer that this is a standard
methodology in historical works. Typically a paper or book
presents factual information; makes conclusions which are sometimes
new or difficult; provides some possible objections to its own thesis
that seem logical, or may be from the intended audience’s
perspective or the status quo; and then it finally overturns each of
those objections and verifies its original thesis. It will not be
hard for the average interested reader who is a non-expert to readily
distinguish where the blanks are being filled in by speculation
between the harder facts which are usually cited.

While
it is not mentioned in the body of the text, the biographical notes
in the back cover make it clear that the author is drawing on
initiatory experiences and oral traditions in the various GD related
groups he has been active in. While reading, one is left with the
impression that much of the information without citation is blended
oral tradition and the author's own opinions, all of which I enjoyed
reading. While it is written from the attitude of a practitioner, and
as has already been mentioned, therefore has no obligatory
requirement to take up a specific methodology in its approach;
nonetheless, as a reader I was so captivated by some of the stories
so much that I wished to know more about the sources of some of the
information. A small criticism and request would therefore be that I
would have liked to have seen even more historical citations
presented whenever it was possible. As this book already shows all
the hallmarks of a title that will be much sought-after for years to
come, I expect will likely be slated for re-prints. Perhaps the need
for more citations is something that could be rectified in future or
new expanded editions.

In
a final analysis, the foray into Mathers and the old Golden Dawn’s
history was well done. Particularly the sections on Mathers possible
political motives and some of his unsavoury and extreme associations
in Right Wing politics were new to me, as I expect they will be to
many of King’s
readers.
I thoroughly enjoyed the political section of the book, while the
publication of some of these older documents has been long overdue.
The slight dabs of layman's psycho-analysis were warranted and will
be much appreciated to anyone following a magical path. I have always
felt that a genuine magician’s primary goals would be tertiary in
nature: first, to develop a specialised skill-set; second, to better
oneself; and third, to improve the world around us. Wisdom and
insight are two inner constitutions life's maturity can take,
regardless if one is working to better oneself through a magical path
or not, and in this regard, ribald humour aside, King
delivers.

These
commentaries were interesting, and I particularly valued those on the
Vault. The section on the Vault walls was good, as well as the
typescript and reprinted sections from an original MSS of Book
of the Tomb,
which is not available in print anywhere else; it has literally been
a long-lost document to many of us. Now we finally have the painting
instructions for the inside
of
the Pastos that are missing from all other published Golden Dawn
books.

Furthermore,
the author offers a personal dialogue about his efforts building a
Vault. While I do not always agree with the more personal magical
theories presented in King
Over the Water,
no matter, because they are worthy as an Adept-level considerations,
they are thought-provoking and intelligent, and so I enjoyed
pondering them. I really can not emphasise this enough. This
level of Golden Dawn work is valuable, and by finally printing the
Book
of the Tomb
and
providing an insightful Commentary, this book proves to be an
excellent reference and will take its place as the primary resource
for Vault construction. For anyone serious magical practitioner
of the Golden Dawn tradition, this tiny section alone is worth many
times the cover price.

I
also thought some of the cipher musings were pretty astute. I have
been a proponent of what the book terms as the "reverse-engineered"
school for going on 20 years, which is the suggestion that the cipher
itself is forged after or during the same time period as the rituals
were worked out. I will not support this assertion in this review;
rather, you can read all about it in King.

The
section on S.L. Mathers is about two-thirds of the book, and is
therefore the main feature of attention; however, the original
documents such as The
Book of the Tomb
and
the full versions of the Alpha et Omega’s Z
Documents,
which are both printed here in full for the first time, are where
this book really shines for the researcher. There is also a solid
document on colour written by an anonymous modern Adept that is
informative and helpful.

There
are only the most minor editing details that were missed and some
Hebrew misspelling, but that is par for the course in any major
undertaking such as this book obviously has been. I recall finding
far worse mistakes in the various editions of The
Golden Dawn
by
Israel Regardie, mistakes that we have all had to contend with for
many decades before they were rectified in the newer editions. As
always, when using information of this nature several texts should be
compared, as the maxim goes: caveat lector. This small observation
should not deter anyone from picking up this excellent book, there
were fewer mistakes in King
Over the Water
than
in your average popular novel has these days, and in this regard the
editing staff did a good job.

The
pencil or charcoal sketches by Paola Farrell also deserve mention.
They are very beautiful, and these pieces add a dimension and an
elegance to the book that is lacking from other new books on the same
subject that are inexplicably peopled with the usual fare of
clip-art, or photocopied and pixleated wood-cut images.

All-in-all,
I think this book is an invaluable addition to the corpus of Golden
Dawn reference books, and I am appreciative of its variety of
contents. As the years pass, I feel this is a volume that generations
of magicians will be grateful to have access to; and I would not be
surprised if various Adepts are now repainting sections of their
Pastos and Vault based on these newly available instructions! I have
really enjoyed reading this book, and I encourage people to buy this
and study it well, your efforts will be well repaid.

This "birthday e-card" below went around over the last few weeks to most of the GD and other Orders who are "fraternal" or rather co-ed "societal" with each other, as well as to authors and individuals of note, not all of whom are GD.

Kind of like a birthday at the office. ;)

Check out the Facebook Group:

Because of the distance from the States, our Temple (www.thubantemple.com) do not get to meet a lot of people face to face as often as some of the American temples and Orders; but we sure do correspond online whenever possible, and when we do meet up, it can really be worthwhile. After this announcement, and the Facebook posts, the folks in our group have been sending me private emails saying how proud they are to be part of GD in general, and happy for the HOGD in their accomplishments as well.

Nice to see that the GD groups around the world are populated with healthy, well-mannered people who are in contact with each other, and get along well; even if we are in different orders. ;)

Thank you to the Cicero's and the HOGD, 30 years is a long time these days, that is way longer than the original Order ran without interruption for in Europe and the UK; you folks must be doing something right. Keep on writing and keep up The Great Work!

It is that time of year again where our members and many GD temples around the world are getting ready to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox. For many years that the mind of our membership runneth not to the contrary, after the meeting the members of Thuban Temple have happily debated the Element attribution to the Hall in the Equinox in the banquet room over a few pints. Most GD practitioners will have noticed it is slightly different than in the 0=0, as the Cup of Wine and Paten are switched in the Hall of the Equinox. I would like to share my own opinions on the matter.

To begin, I feel a dogmatic summary of what we know from the rituals is needed, it is presented is in 3 points. This is followed by a few posits, and finished with an assumptive summary and a possible solution.

DOGMATIC SUMMARY

1) The Altar is the same in both rituals:

East - Rose
South - Red Lamp
West - Cup
North - Paten of Bread and Salt

We know that the altar setup is attributed to the "four prevailing winds of Britain", which is also used in Modern Wicca.

2) In the 0=0, the Elements are placed in the Hall as follows:

Hierophant - Rose
Hiereus - Paten of Bread and Salt
Stolistes - Cup
Dadouchos - Red Lamp

We know this as the "Tree of Life" Attribution, which are the elements of the four lowest spheres, notably with the Rose in Tiphareth and the Hierophant and not Yesod and the Hegemon, as the Hegemon rather works with the Element of Spirit in balance during the Equinox. This is fitting to place the Hierophant as Air, for that Element is attributed to the Middle Pillar of the Tree. (While not central to this paper, it is interesting to note that the Air and Spirit attributions change in the Portal, where the Hegemon becomes Air, and the Chief Adept is Spirit.)

3) In the Equinox<layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-3" style="background-color: Fuchsia; color: black;"></layer>, the Elements are not placed in the Hall as in 2; but rather the same as in 1:

Hierophant - Rose
Hiereus - Cup of Wine
Stolistes - Paten of Bread and Salt
Dadouchos - Red Lamp

While we know the rituals are written at different times, and this often creates different contexts, this alone does not explain the difference between the two placements in the Hall. In other regards, the setup for the two ceremonies is identical. So, why the change?

POSITS

If we take the Altar as symbolic of a type of Adamic Ark, bark or coffin; and the Elements as a four-fold representation of the sphere of sensation, the body of Christos, the Osirian Pharaoh's body in subdivision; the Astrological and Alchemical Elements which are the magical origins of the Jungian and Myers-Briggs personality traits and types, if you will, then it takes on a most personal interpretation; in a word, it is microcosmic.

Therefore the 0=0 Hall becomes the tree that captures Osiris; the path of the flaming sword that guards the way to paradise; the world temple or universe; the esoteric Jewish traits that allow the divine presence to arrive and flow through the Kabbalist who faces the veil of the Shekinah which covers Yod Heh in the East; or even if it represents the simple, secular ideals of positive and healthy traits required to be present in a positive society; in a word, it is macrocosmic.

ASSUMPTIVE SUMMARY

If we agree on these above posits, then the Equinox<layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-4" style="background-color: Fuchsia; color: black;"></layer> must be a different model, one where the microcosmic prevails, it is a type of detailed analysis of the microcosmic. Few would question that it is composed of a theme that includes the elements. That it is different than simply a mirror of the 0=0, that it is more than just another event that we are now allowed to attend as Neophytes is another posit that will need to be explored. Portal also has a similar floor-plan as the 0=0 and the Equinox, with the addition of the veil before the pillars and not behind the dais as in the other grades. As it says in the opening ceremony "Fratres and Sorores of all Grades of the Golden Dawn in the Outer..." So, as we know, this ceremony is intended for all GD grades, and therefore it is probable that there are similarities. So what is the significance of these differences?

The 0=0, among other things, explores this micro and macro relationship in relating the candidate to the universal. The elements of the altar are dismembered and placed on the tree, and then returned for the Eucharist. The Neophyte is therefore, among many other things, shown the method to be made holy by this process. As it is later echoed in the 5=6 rubric: "There is no part of me that is not of the Gods!" I can only assume Crowley understood this when he made the above 5=6 line originally appearing the the Book of the Dead central to the other great Eucharist of the magical tradition, his Gnostic Catholic Mass.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION

So, if the Equinox<layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-5" style="background-color: Fuchsia; color: black;"></layer> does not simply mirror the 0=0, then what is it a model of? You may recall that during the Equinox, each Elemental Officer makes a cross in his or her station with the attributed Element, and the Hegemon with the Kerux's lamp. I suggest that with all its crosses, it is a series of five 'Elemental buds' if you will, that will later bloom into the Outer Order Grades. The Elemental crosses in the Equinox are referencing the Watchtowers of the Universe, acting through the agency of the four winds or directions. Why? Because the attribution used in the Equinox is where the Enochian Tablets of Watchtowers are or are to be located in the Hall during the Outer Order Grades; because the Elemental grades are also personal and therefore microcosmic; finally, and most importantly, because the Equinox ritual itself is based on Solar and seasonal themes more than it is only the Kabbalistic tree facing Yod and Heh as in the 0=0. It is instead to represent a more myopic focus as its main feature, the altar is expounded upon personally before the Eucharist common to the 0=0 and the Equinox. It is the seasons and the individual that is to be concerned here, the ritual is representing the two points of the year that are in balance between light and darkness, just as in the various Solar myths common to the assumptions about the Egyptian and Mediterranean Mystery Schools made by 18th Century Freemasonry, that, for good or for ill, informed the writers of the Golden Dawn ceremonies.

These Elemental Crosses mark the locations of the Enochian Tablets, and are similar in nature if not identical to the Black Cross of the Tablet of Union and the Great Crosses of the King and Senior's names that are used in the Elemental Grades and the Ritual of the Portal. These also mirror the Crosses that are brought upright into Pentagrams by the forces shown in the Portal Ceremony. Therefore the Equinox becomes a sort of Microcosmic model that summarizes the entire process from the 0=0, through the Elemental grades, and crowned in Portal.

In other words, the Equinox is a map of the personal territory the initiate is about to undertake in the Outer Order, but it is not the journey yet. It is appropriate for the initiate to experience balance and wholeness in a representative ceremony at the Equinox twice yearly. This is a social and internal affirmation in the Eucharist, but not the complete accomplishment of the great work; it is a taste of self-balance and individual wholeness before these traits are actualized in the personal success that characterizes the ideal of a full Adept. As the Hierophant says in the closing ritual "May what we have partaken maintain us in our search for the QUINTESSENCE, the Stone of the Philosophers. True Wisdom, Perfect Happiness, the SUMMUM BONUM."

The Equinox is a microcosmic representation of the raw matter in form, like the 0=0, but not only as compared to the journey up the tree collecting the divine sparks as in the 0=0 and the Elemental Grades. Instead it is showing the perfected being as an ideal in the Solar myths through the Elements and Watchtowers; it is the entire subject of the Seasons in relationship to the unrefined soul in each of us; elements, dross, gold and all.

"For by names and images are all powers awakened and re-awakened."

One proof of this is simple. When Adepts are invoking the elements, it is sufficient to use the solo 0=0 and the SRP, say opening before a ZAM working. If this were not true, and the signs did not do anything or move any energy, you would need to repeat the rituals of the entire Outer Order to properly invoke the elements. I don't think I am going out on a branch if I contend that in the SIRP the Pentagrams, names and signs suffice to invoke the same forces. (Sometimes I do longer personal openings, but that is optional and not required, IMO).

I think it is fair to say that we can all agree that the foundation of the Outer Order is needed to raise the solid super-structure or framing of the Second Order. The above is just another way of stating the more important details of how this same idea of building upon the earlier teachings works in Adept practice. If we follow the metaphor, then a very succinct picture develops.

When the workers go to build the foundation, they have labourers dig down to the clay, then they build a mould, pour the concrete and set thick bolts into the top of it for later. When it drys, they tear off the mould, and are done. This foundation could be likened to the Outer Order.

When the framers show up to work, they bang the frame together and bolt the bottom plate of each wall to the foundation. The security of the rest of the structure in the house is built off of this. For my purpose of an example, this framing is the Inner Order NAM or ZAM building his or her tools and consecrating them (exactly when this occurs depends on your own Order's structure).

When the framers show up (ZAM), they certainly don't have to tear out the foundations (Elemental Grades) and start again. They simply double-check that the foundation is level, make small measurement adjustments if it needs it, and build on it! The whole structure doesn't redo the past work, it uses it by distributing the weight of the house on the foundation, and anchoring on the strong but comparatively little bolts that secure the bottom of each wall frame to the foundation. These are the signs and symbols, the colours of the MM, the Tarot system, astrology, etc.

Our work with the signs, words and Grand Words is that very pinning that connects the Inner Order or true Temple structure of practical magic to the foundation poured in the Outer Order with its heavy reliance on sound theory. Without these little symbols and gestures are supposed to summarize the cosmic forces, and that this relationship is the anchor to all our learning in the Outer, the temple or home would be unsecured and you would have it just blow away in the first bad storm, or thieves could abscond with it whole. When the house is built upon a solid foundation, then those who dwell within are not only sheltered, but are happy and well kept, and the workmanship will last for hundreds of years.

There was a set of notes on this subject that was circulated in the late 1800's, but it was thought that something more definitive would be more useful.

In writing letters, emails and interacting in the temple, there are various special, traditional modes of address in the Outer Order, and they are as follows:

Female members are called Soror in the singular form, and sorores in the plural. Male members are called Frater in the singular, and though it is commonly fraters for plural, it is more correctly fratres. The abbreviations are Fra and Sor in the oldest of Golden Dawn documents, but Fr and Sr were also used. These may also read: Fra.'. or Fra. and Sor.'. or Sor. The significance of these abbreviations are of course to be sought in their Gematria.

The three dots are the mathematical symbol for the term 'therefore' which is used in masonry and the fringe masonry of the Golden Dawn to suggest an obvious abbreviation that the reader should already know the word being referred to, such as in a title of a ritual, a script or a secret word that is known to all initiates. For example, G.'.D.'. clearly means Golden Dawn.

When abbreviating mottoes, periods may replace the symbol of therefore if it would be cumbersome, they may be left out entirely, or just the first initial may be used. For example, VH Frater Yechidah Shemesh Yetzirah could be a series of different abbreviations: VH Frater Yod Shin Yod; VH Frater Y.'.Sh.'.Y.'. is correct, but would often prove to be too long; VH Frater Y.Sh.Y.; VH Frater YShY; VH Frater Y; or in a less formal setting, Frater Y or even just 'Y'.

In another example, it is sometimes easier to just use the first name of a motto, so Frater Verbum Caro Factum Est could be Frater V or Frater Verbum, but more commonly in person he has just been referred to as Verbum.

The Order is commonly known as a co-ed fraternity. It would not be incorrect to call it co-ed sorority. Neither are strictly correct, and co-ed society is the term originally used by the Order.

In writing a letter or email, the header should be one of the following:

Care Frater, for singular or Care Fratres, for plural.
Cara Soror, for singular or Cara Sorores, for plural.
Cari Fratres and Sorores or Cari Sorores and Fratres, either order is correct, and both are plural. However, Carete is the most common plural form.

In personal letters between members, a quote in the footer before the signature is encouraged to be selected as something unique to the magical understanding and experiences of the individual. In letters of an official nature that are directed to Golden Dawn members of any of the other Orders at large, the Mystic Address in the footer may be something like “Khabs Am Pekht, Konx Om Pax, Light In Extension” simply “Khabs Am Pekht” or even “Light In Extension.”

This or something like it from the Neophyte ritual is a very suitable address. Another example would be “Peradventure thus, shall I obtain the light.” or “The sun hath arisen, and...the light shineth in the darkness.”

***

No Second Order symbolism should ever be used in any Outer Order letter or correspondence, no matter what the fancy, insight, or grade of the magicians in question. These unmentionable addresses are used only in the official correspondence with those those magicians whom one is intimately certain are initiates of the Inner Order. Usage of Second Order symbolism shall be completely shunned by our Regularly Received and Initiated membership, and politely ignored it ever be utilised by another magician of whom one is certain has not received such an Initiation. Order symbolism that is popularly used in such a fashion is often of such a nature that it is correctly a mode of recognition of the grades both physically and astrally. As such, it is not entered into here.

Neophytes, Zelatori, Theorici, and Practici are all simply frater or soror as above. Philosophi are styled Honoured Frater or Soror. This is more commonly H Frater, H Soror, H Fr, H Sr or in the oldest documents of our Order still extant H Fra. and H Sor.

Members who are of the grade of Adeptus Minor and above, and any member who is installed or are acting as Hierophant are styled Very Honored Frater of Soror. Meanwhile, the crossed sashes of Portal is the highest grade revealed in the Outer Order, regardless of the true grade of the member. This is for reasons of humility, in an attempt to create equality between the Inner and Outer Order members by treating the two societies as the separate bodies that they truly are. Furthermore, the true work in the so-called higher grades is to perpetuate harmony and balance in the world, and are in service to the functioning of the Outer Order, especially in its government.

The final honorific that is useful in the Outer Order that is revealed in this introductory paper on the subject is that of the Greatly Honoured Chiefs of the Second Order, who are all of the Grade of Adeptus Exemptus. This honorific is not used in an official capacity by Outer Order members writing or exchanging letters, for the Chief Adept of the Second or Inner Order is not available in any official position to the Outer Order, which is ruled entirely by the Imperator. Regardless of grades in the Order, who is even certain of what level of enlightenment he or she has truly attained for him or herself, much less is able to gauge the advancement of another frater or soror?

Keeping this apparent paradox in mind, it is our custom to at select and determine our membership from those who behave in a harmonious and mature manner with others, and self-define as being intentionally on a spiritual or magical path. Together with a few other important criteria that are only orally divulged when asked, all three Chiefs are required to approve any prospective candidates.

If you meet a person whom you think might be a suitable candidate for the Order, before you approach them, or even reveal the existence of Golden Dawn members in this city, and especially their names, we ask that you discuss how to do so with your sponsors. While we do have a minimal internet profile, there is a positive procedure to follow in interacting with new candidates. We offer the simple explanation that our mysteries are not suitable for everyone. Hopefully this has firmly impressed upon you the care that is taken in the pre-application process, and to remind you of the near-invisible profile our Order keeps in the local community.

As a Neophyte, you will quickly learn these nuances, and when you have been initiated into the Grade of Zelator, you may recommend and sponsor new members. With careful discretion, severe standards, and excited interest from all our suitable prospective candidates, we have set a solid foundation for our order. Blended in such a fashion like steel alloy has replaced iron weapons, we know this is a winning combination, and with this weapon of appropriately selective standards we will continue to grow and operate in good health, wealth, strength and joy and peace. Having yourself already passed the various hurdles involved in joining the Order, and having taken a solemn obligation to keep inviolate the secrets of the mysteries, we implicitly trust your discretion in this matter.

We also wish to remind to you that even at the Grade of Neophyte we consider this to be your Order, even though you may not know all our customs and rituals yet. Always keep in the forefront of your mind that those fratres and sorores around you, your sponsors, the other temple officers, and especially the three Chiefs are all in service to the Order out of their love for the work and an ardent desire to share the mysteries with you. Once again, I would like to thank you for joining your Order. I know you will enjoy it, and wish you all the best.

VH Frater YShY

Imperator,
Thuban Temple

September, 2007ev.
Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-45745719251454363982009-09-14T21:53:00.000-07:002009-09-15T23:22:38.952-07:00Cancellarius' Charge
I wish to cordially greet and welcome you at your reception as a new member of our Order, which has been founded, as I am sure you are already aware, as a secret college whose main object is to study and teach the hidden wisdom and the mysteries of nature and science in an academic and practical setting. The nature of our activities is positive and life affirming. Lecture topics include but are not exclusively limited to: healing, cabala, tarot, pagan mythology, astrology, Hermeticism, ceremonial magic, esoteric Sufism and Gnosticism.

As a member of this temple, you not only invited, but are charged to attend our regular meetings in earnest. Held on the first and third Fridays of every month at 7pm, these meetings are required of all our membership. The only excuse for non-attendance are emergencies of a familial or work-related nature. Like this evening, the attire to arrive at the temple is always semi-formal, after which we change into our full regalia.

The first Friday consists of one or two 45 minute lectures or papers, and is often followed by a practice for one of our Grade Ceremonies. You are welcome to apply to present a paper, which must be submitted in writing, in full, to myself or the current Cancellarius, before the schedule of events for the next six months is finalised at the coming Equinox, of which you will have due and timely notice to harmonise yourself with accordingly.

The third Friday is the main ceremony or ritual night, where we confer the Lower Grades of the Outer Order and perform other solemn ceremonies. You are also welcome to attend all grade ceremonies for which you have already Passed. Emergent meetings for ritual practices and conferring higher grades may also be held on the few Fridays between the first and last of the month, in particular in those unusual cases when there are five Fridays in a month. These will always be posted not less than four months in advance.

The Ceremony of the Equinox is our twice-yearly Instillation of Officers, and together with the four or five scheduled Neophyte Receptions, form the most important events of our yearly calender, therefore on these six or seven occasions your attendance is always mandatory.

For your information, our Outer Order is run strictly along not-for-profit and democratic lines, has rotational leadership, and formally follows Robert’s Rules of Order at all of the business meetings. Our Neophytes are also entitled to vote at all Thuban Temple meetings.

Our General Purposes Meeting or Business Meeting takes place on the first Wednesday of the month, and members who wish to attend GP must not only RSVP, but if they wish to speak on a topic, they must submit their agenda item to the Cancellarius by letter or email at least the day before the meeting. It is important to RSVP, as this meeting is not held at the downtown temple, but at the Praemonstrator's Library.

There are several resources available to the membership for more information. The first is the embryonic Thuban Temple website, which we hope one day will be our major resource. Then there is a private forum which may be used by members to communicate with each other, and be better informed on our temple activities. Apart from the proprietary documents and papers you will find on the private site, our main textbooks are the Complete System of Golden Dawn Magic and The Golden Dawn both by Israel Regardie. The former work contains the rituals of the original Order along with some of Regardie's best papers, the latter contains the work of the Stella Matutina, a later Golden Dawn Order that Regardie was a member of. You will find the knowledge lectures we use for study in the latter book, and for your convenience the First Knowledge Lecture is now available to download from our private forum.

As you should now be informed, there are three temple Chiefs who rule the order. They may currently be reached in their official capacity only at Thuban Temple’s monthly business meeting. If you have any other questions about the Order, we recommend you contact your two sponsors. They have by recommending you, expressed their interest and intention to be your guide throughout the grades of the Outer Order. Your sponsors will make themselves available to you in this friendly manner, and will should you require it, lend a helping hand in the study of our work.

Congratulations be yours once again.

Written by VH Frater YShY
Thuban Temple

September, 2007ev.
Edited September 14th, 2009ev.

Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-73842684408984642112009-09-14T18:19:00.000-07:002009-09-23T18:26:47.776-07:00Praemonstrance to the new Neophyte

Florence Farr, Praemonstratrix at the fin du siecle.

Welcome, Frater and or Soror Neophyte(s) to our most ancient and venerable institution. Ancient, no doubt it is, because over the years its name and traditions have withstood the tests and trials of time, the misuse of charlatans, and the exultation of Adepts with the dignity and prestige its study so rightly deserves and demands. Venerable, for in its pale the wisdom and methods used by the magicians of the past to apprehend the crown of attainment are indeed contained.

One of the first concerns which often burns in the mind of a new neophyte, is whether they have the ability to learn and master the knowledge of the Order which they have intended to make their new domicile. The second probable concern is of course, what are the end results of all the academic studies the Order now apparently requires of its members?

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in the Outer, does indeed hold the requisite knowledge from the magical traditions of the ages. But there is a greater lesson taught within its bosom, greater than just being deeply informative about the occult learning that its name evokes, and far greater than the fraternal sharing which can warm the spirit of those who share similar recondite interests. I speak of course of the knowledge of the methods of how to study magic. It is this directive methodology behind the art, and an art it is indeed, that have been chiefly laid out in our multitude of sympathetic correspondences. As all the rituals and lectures of the Outer Order and a few of the Inner are already in print, this approach to learning as offered by traditional Orders is a real key to the field of Hermeticism. It is literally this secret traditional methodology and process of how to learn our system of magic that is the thrust behind initiation: it is the grace and the expression of the higher.

Some feel emotionally moved when the hoodwink is removed, and the symbol of the Outer Order upon the altar is finally seen. The budding magician is often moved in a very different way when it is further revealed that there is now work to be done. The new frater or soror oft looks at the First Knowledge Lecture and query's why the basic ritual and several pages of academic material are to be committed to memory. This is, of course, a very excellent question to ask! Some magicians are excited at the challenge; others have already learned the material expected of them; and yet the majority are unpleasantly surprised, and seem to view the symbols in The First Knowledge Lecture with something akin to horror.
Those of the latter category may find their agitation manifesting in a manifold fashion: firstly, symbols of a magical nature are not to only be discussed, but actually studied; secondly, that the information in the lecture, the content of which they have not yet comprehend the value of, must be not only studied but memorised perfectly; thirdly, that the ritual and meditation materials of uncertain origins, at least as far as the new neophyte is concerned, are to be not only memorised, but fully worked. While in all likelihood they are still enthusiastic for their membership and the Order, when the folder of the First Knowledge Lecture is opened for the first time, all at once the majority of our new members are placed into their first serious, but only temporary, setback.

We make it our custom at this temple, to Receive into the Order only actual magicians, occultists or individuals who are deeply spiritual, and in at least one of these capacities, you are such a suitable Candidate. A person with the above background that is unfamiliar with the functioning of a magical Order might readily assume that the point of all the quaint memorisation of symbols and ritual work is to receive another Jewel (or embroidered cross) on their sash, as some meaningless social accolade from the organization they have just joined. However, this is not the case, and as the new Neophyte claimed on his or her Application that he or she has set out to learn and accomplish magic, so the lessons and curriculum have been set accordingly. While he or she has already been told that these are only the basic rudiments of occult science, the reason for the work must be made clearer to the modern student than it ever has been in the past, for today's student has not the inclination to put forth hours of work, nay, years or even a lifetime of effort, simply on another being's authoritative say-so. His or her interest and desire must be engaged.

The reason for the work is simple. Magic is a language that is both eloquent and personal. The Adept uses it to express himself in the most spiritual ways, it is a terminology and a philosophic dialect that both other magicians and spiritual creatures may understand, it is our basic technology. But first the Neophyte Magician needs to learn the alphabet of their new endeavor. Next, she slowly sounds out the consonants and vowels. After awhile she learns of its syntax, grammar, sentence structure, case, tense and tone. Then eventually she starts to form sentences and paragraphs of her own, beginning to argue and debate ideas in passionate discourse, or perhaps compose the most moving of magical acts, the poetry and oration of which literally raises the powers of nature in reply, communicating mysteries, heaven and earth in unity. However, to raise this level of energy within themselves and in nature, one must be able to do more than provide a rudimentary grunt of the constituting ceremonial consonants. When a magician has done the correct amount of work, no more and no less, they will achieve the advanced or adept abilities and the requisite skills completely for themselves.
But first they have to learn the rudiments of our terminology. It is therefore important you truly learn the basics of our progressive system. Like in any language, terms begin with the letters they are composed of. Meanwhile, the alphabet that has been already mentioned, is not strictly speaking, just a metaphor. In this case, it is literally the four elements, the symbols of astrology, and the Hebrew Aleph-Beth. Take note so there is understanding: it is not the Hebrew language that is utilised by the Hermetic Magician, although this would be an asset for anyone to know, it is the Hebrew and Aramaic terminology of the Cabala that we are concerned with.

Learning magic is like learning an instrument. Better music does not always stem from better technique, but the best music often reminds one nostalgically of something else heard once before, even when it has been newly composed. Nature herself seems to form in recognisable mathematical patterns that transcend the compound material of which they are composed, whether it be organic or not. Experienced biologists, musicians and magicians alike know that this is because there is a certain mathematical formula present in nature that is universal, transcending any language or metaphor. In magic these patterns move beyond our cultural traditions, and may be found in the sense of inner rightness that we are all privy to.

The fact that the great composers and magicians of the past have written their works down for posterity means that we can learn to play their songs and enact their magical efforts, effectively recreating what they have already done and accomplished before us. This of course doesn't mean that we automatically gain all their individual abilities or wisdom, but it does mean that once the Magician learns the esoteric basics through the Order's curriculum, so may she begin to form a solid foundation of theory and practice, eventually grasping with strength the philosophy behind magic. The dilettante has no need for this, he is happy to just read or discuss these concepts, oftentimes getting even the most basic theories confused from his armchair.

Those who aspire to be an expert before they have learned even the basics of theory and practice will always be ultimately unsatisfied with their progress in the work. They know that something is missing from their efforts, for when they try to discuss and debate with others, perform unclear divination or fail to raise spirits, they feel something is wrong. They may not consciously recognise the absence of complete abilities in themselves, and thus cannot distinguish the overall feeling of dissatisfaction with their magical progress for what it really is: their own ignorance.

Even saying all of this, a magician does not require the auspices of a magical order to be validated, for true magical validation comes from within. She does require that her studies be undertaken to completion, and it is this study, after protracted and sincere efforts, which tends to uncover the very best within each of us. A true magician is always an ongoing student of the mysteries, and after a time once the work is known well enough and the process of training has continued for many cycles, the rigidity of memorization falls away. At the Adept level, the work and learning becomes a method of expressing anti-rigidity. Of this paradox, frequently pure creativity and originality are the result.

The innovator in any subject would do best to first learn all the rudiments of their art or science, lest every modern musician become bogged down in the wood shop, building his instrument from scratch before he has even learned to play a single note. So it is also true for the magician. The Neophyte learns the fundamentals; the Adeptus builds the classical tools; and the Master explores and reinvents the system on an inner level, according to his or her understanding of the universe. But every master of music, no matter how promising a student he or she originally was, has always started his or her career at one time as a beginner, and frequently learned from another musician who is already adept at the art. So it is also true with magic.

But far be it for us to set ourselves above you in our capacity as instructors in your studies. This is a fraternity, and we all work together as equals in the act of learning and practicing our work, you are not subjected to the whims of a teacher or guru here. While we may lecture and test each other on our educational work, of the higher lessons you will never be scheduled sit in examination with one of our Officers, no matter how inspired or exemplary they may seem as fellow fratres and sorores of the Order, for we are all the exclusive and solitary pupils of our higher-selves. So for now, we leave the invention of new instruments to the artifice of the master, to whom the work of creation in the very wood shop of the temple has become their essential practice, and we turn again to the work of a neophyte.

When we consider the effort required of our neophytes to learn the science, it is seen as a test of their diligence, desire, knowledge and will to truly be a magician. The endurance of which is but an expression of the patience and work ethic needed to accomplish the work one has begun today. However, far be it for us to insist upon any one's blind faith. Now that you have been officially Received into the Order, ask your new fratres and sorores about the value of the work, attend the lectures and rituals of the institution, do the exercises prescribed by the Order, but ultimately decide upon its value only for yourself.

If at any point, there is a question about the utility of the work at hand, bring it forward immediately in the spirit of scientific engagement and constant questioning that leads to true knowledge. However, our neophytes have also come to expect that what they may be provided is not simply a solution, or even one answer among many, but a practice or means to experimenting within yourself to discover the true meaning of the Great Work, which is personal.

Our practices which begin with such ceremonies as the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram, work in much the same way as how a modern computer operates. In other words, much like how hardware downloads and uses software. Your mind is susceptible to its programming, but the fact that our work and language is built on merely arbitrary designations should only encourage philosophic study, for one of the first lessons of linguistics is that while there may be distinct and ancient origins for most words and terms, language has always been arbitrary, even while it still commands the power it was inevitably intended to posses. So too, does the magical language yield its potency soon enough to the knowledgeable magician's will and inspired emotions, allowing her to build the mental and physical tools necessary to artistically engage the natural forces of life and death.

These rituals, grades and lectures are in fact, brilliantly designed tools unto themselves that gradually unfold into multi-purpose instruments, but only once they have been properly practiced and analyzed over ample time. The grade meditations, while dating from a period a little later in the Order's history than the other practices, are nonetheless integral to the accomplishment of the Great Work. They tend to release the early results of the neophyte's efforts in a personal format, as a kind of gift to the Magician in the form of a dream or vision, a progress report that once recorded in her Magical Journal, only she may truly begin to decipher its import.

Finally, all the Grade ceremonies are of the utmost importance to be worked and understood, for within them is concealed in plain sight the symmetrical portrayal of magic as a type of mathematical algebra. Once the values of the symbol and allegory are filled in with the individual understanding, attributes and personal wisdom of the magician, true knowledge is gained of that Gnosis within, which is the knowledge of self.

VH Frater YShY
Imperator
Past Praemonstrator
Past Hierophant
Thuban Temple

September 14th, 2009ev.

The ideas for this paper was taken entirely and equally
from correspondence sent between Fratres SN and YShY
Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-45449786930695352612009-09-12T20:57:00.000-07:002009-09-15T11:47:48.153-07:00The Black Sash of VH Frater YShY

The Sash of Grades

This sash was made for me in 1996 by my lover at the time, a Soror C. In the Outer Order of the GD, the elements are often mingled in opposition, like the path-sphere opposites in Theoricus, Practicus and Philosophus, and in the Zelator Initiation it is no different. In 1 = 10 the mystery of how the fire element as the spark of life within the earth is explored.

This symbolism is repeated by the red socks and the black robe, as the entire Outer Order in a sense quitteth not Malkuth. The admission badge of a Zelator is the Hermetic Cross, which is indeed a symbol of Kether. This cross is oft described as 17 squares, but laid out on a 5 x 5 grid, which is of course the Mars Qamea, and Mars and the fifth sphere of Geburah are indeed fiery. In the ritual, the red lamp placed on the Zelator altar reiterates this 'fire within' paradigm. For the occult interpretation of the name Zelator given in that grade as the zealous student who blows the fire of the alchemist.

The last point is important because it is the fire in an alchemical experiment which subdivides the four elements and the three philosophic elements, providing the energy for the solve part of the solve et coagula equation. Solve is a process which begins in the Outer Order, which is why the symbols on the altar are but various configurations of the GD Order's symbol. The heat is dividing the various portions of the magician's soul into their undivided elemental forms, shown by the various configurations of the holy symbols. This journey through the elements of the grades finally reveals in Philosophus, the highest grade of the Outer Order: the symbol of Sulpher.

We can further reflect on this supposed fire-within-the-earth GD teaching with a little sidebar exploration into the philosophy and work of other prominent adepts of the order, AE Waite and PF Case. So let us momentarily consider their non-GD Fool cards. While the Fool symbolizes air in the GD, but both Aleph and Shin can represent the fiery life breath or element of spirit in the BOTA interpretations, and the version of the Sepher Yetzirah attributions also used by the GD.

There is a little more illustrated in the Rider and BOTA Fools about this fire-earth relationship. Waite and PF Case garb the Fool in the four colors of Malkuth, but place red in the lining of the jacket. This is no accident, intimating the inner fire within the earth, a relationship between opposites.

Furthermore, the red of Aries, over the feet of Pisces has an occult link to the Shewbread tablet found in the Zelator grade. This place between the beginning and end of the Zodiac is located by following the top point of the pentagram. It is one and the same as the place that marks the top and the bottom of the color spectrum, it is therefore past the realms of what the human eye can see. The first unseen bands of rays at these two opposing ends are known to scientists as infrared and ultraviolet, and combined here at the uppermost point of the pentagram. Here they are supplied as as good a metaphor as any other symbol available to magicians for the unseen and ultimately unknowable nature of spirit.
Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-76771440551888673392009-09-01T14:53:00.000-07:002009-09-14T16:05:40.841-07:00Minutiae of the Seven Pillars of Recognition
Otherwise referred to as the "Seven Pillars" of Golden Dawn

Erected at Thuban Temple, #1 on the Registry of British Columbia, Canada.

These are the modes of recognition used by the Cancellarius of Thuban Temple in his correspondence duties when endeavoring to establish fraternal relations with any other Fraternal Bodies, Study Groups or Golden Dawn Outer Orders, and to promote reciprocal visitation between them.

These seven pillars are not overly detailed, most groups will immediately recognise themselves within these standards! However, basic though they may be, all seven of these pillars form a part of the mandatory requirements that Thuban Temple uses to establish fraternal relations with other Golden Dawn Orders. All seven must be present and compliant in the other Order before that body is even considered for fraternal recognition.

1. Use of and adherence to the Cipher Manuscript as a source derivation for the established ritual material.

Any variance from the Cipher Manuscript will not be recognised. However, unique enactments of the rituals, and changes which are within these sensible boundaries will be most especially tolerated, recognised and wholeheartedly promoted to the benefit of the entire Golden Dawn community of Orders.
No cognisance is taken of the origins of any Golden Dawn Order, whether their work is based solely on published material or secret internal documents. No consideration of lineage or origins will be undertaken by Thuban Temple in recognising magicians in our fraternity. Whether another Orders origins are modern and recently formed, older as in the latter half of the twentieth century, or supposedly ancient or even said to be somehow stemming in an initiatory manner from the Golden Dawn organisation of the late eighteen-hundreds, we are not interested or concerned with how your group came to be doing the work, we are only concerned that it is being done.

2. Complete memorization of the Outer Order Knowledge Lectures at each grade by the membership.

The content of which is set forth at a bare minimum by the published Outer Order documents of the Stella Matutina, as found in The Golden Dawn by Israel Regardie, and currently published by Llewellyn. Most GD orders will easily meet this requirement, which is to be kept at this minimum. As there is no way of confirming the quality of work another order does, (other than through the initial correspondence with other Temple Chiefs, where some discussion of material and educational standards is near inevitable) nor would we ever wish to, therefore no effort will be made to micromanage another temple's affairs, or to test another member of another Golden Dawn Outer Order, as it is completely out of Thuban Temple's jurisdiction and desire to do so.

3. No Order which discriminates against the following will be recognised: race, genetic or perceived; gender as in male, female or otherwise; creed or belief in any capacity.

However, recognition will also not be given to any Order which receives for admission and initiates underage individuals (as determined by whatever the age of majority is in the laws of the country of that Order's domicile, or the age of 19, whatever is younger), nor will groups which follow a countries' laws which would tend to restrict or run contrary to the most absolute and literal understanding of the above Pillar. Such organisations will be considered to be erring and clandestine, and are not be recognised fraternally.

All Orders in fraternal harmony with Thuban Temple are expected to fulfill the spirit of a healthy society and liberty intended by the injunction of this Pillar first and foremost. This important pillar is not subject to the subjective and unique interpretation as are most of the others, and unlike them is not relegated to the sovereign jurisdiction of each respective Order. Once it has been deemed that this pillar has been broken, it will result in the temporary or permanent termination of any fraternal relation between Thuban Temple and the other Golden Dawn Outer Order, with no exceptions.

7. The adherence to and the respect of the traditional oaths of secrecy, however these may be interpreted and practiced.

This has always been a difficult oath to maintain, and today it continues to be an ongoing concern. The Oath of Secrecy is variously interpreted: as total silence regarding all involvement with the Order, literally invoking Levi`s fourth power of the Sphinx; it can be interpreted that the comments and discussion in uninitiated conversation be limited merely to only that which is already in print; or finally taken as merely discretion which reduces attention to themselves in our society which is by nature not all that accepting of the differences in others, especially the oft misunderstood philosophy of Occultists.

While this topic is recognised and encouraged for discussion between Orders, and while the author of these Seven Pillars contests that in the information age of Aquarius the backbone of secrecy is slowly fossilising into the limestone of respect for the mysteries, no attention is to be given by Thuban Temple to the jurisdiction or functioning of any other temple, and this Pillar, while a salient one, is left for those individual temples and Orders to govern themselves accordingly.

Silence is golden, and it is primarily left for the individual Magician to recognise the moments where the cup as the weapon of silence is the correct tool to be chosen over the flaming sword of the word.

In harmony, friendship and love, to the accomplishment of the great work.

VH Frater YShY,
Imperator of Thuban Temple

Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-18254266203305536152009-09-01T14:46:00.000-07:002009-10-01T23:53:31.364-07:00The Seven Pillars of Recognition

(Otherwise referred to as the "Seven Pillars" of Golden Dawn)

Erected at Thuban Temple, #1 on the Registry of British Columbia, Canada.

1. An orange giant, Gamma Draconis is also known by the traditional name Eltanin, and despite its gamma designation, it is actually the brightest star in the constellation today.
Etamin Study Group is a new branch of the Order located in Surrey, B.C. which is of course a part of Greater Vancouver. Not an initiatory body, but an educational one, Etamin is affiliated with Thuban Temple and thus services the educational needs of the temple's distance or Associate Members on the mainland of British Columbia. Etamin is guided by Frater I.'. who is himself a Past Cancellarius or Chief of Thuban Temple and an accomplished Solomonic Magician.

Known anciently as Rastaban, a title now exclusively used for Beta Draconis. Because of the ancient confusion between the two stars, we must consider the magical history of both bodies here. The classical name Rastaban, or less frequently Rastaben, is from the proper Arabic phrase ra's ath-thu'ban or "head of the serpent". Rastaban and Etamin are two terms that share the same Arabic root for serpent or dragon, and thus bears the same symbolism as the rest of the constellation. Etamin is the zenith star above London, i.e. it is the point directly overhead of that city.

Etamin itself, probably due to its brightness, is known as the right eye of the Dragon. According to Elsbeth Ebertin in Fixed Stars and Their Interpretation (1928), Gamma Draco has a Saturnine and Jupiterian nature, also with some Martial influence. The predominance of Saturn gives a preference for solitude. The influence of this star yields mental concentration, but also the possibility of dishonor, downfall and the loss of prestige. However, it is also positive for esoteric and philosophical studies.

Beta Draconis is a binary star that is located 360 light years away from our sun, making it the third brightest star in Draco. This super-giant's dwarf companion orbits around once every four millennia. Beta Draconis is also known as Asuia and Alwaid. Alwaid means "who is to be destroyed". Some find an alternate origin by tracing it to the Arabic al'awwad or "the lute player". Alwaid is a part of the asterism known to the Arabs as the Mother Camels or "al'awa'id".

The annihilation or 'destruction' attribution of Alwaid, is equivalent to the house of Beta or Beth of the transparent intelligence between Kether and Binah, which is the supernal path between the absolute intelligence and the intelligence of faith, whereby faith is truly the final destruction of the intellect of the ruach.

As Gamma is the third letter of the Greek Alphabet, the camel of Gimmel in Hebrew mysticism is also indicated, and thus the triune symbolism of the neshamah. This beast of transport and burden has a special place in the Cabala of the R.R. et A.C., inasmuch as it treads the onerous mercantile and hermetic path through the sandy desert of Daath, connecting Tiphareth with Kether in a supernal union at the crown that sits above 'the head'. This experience is said to be both illuminating, and of such magnitude that it 'destroys' all of the Cabalistic preconceptions of what such an event might entail. It is literally the mode of consciousness which has been described by one ancient fragment of a magical text as a communion with 'he who has no head'.

Etamin is moving closer to the earth, and as it does, its brightness increases. Positing that its current magnitude does not change, in 1.5 million years it will actually be the brightest star in the night sky, matching or shining even brighter than Sirius. This progression has been taken as a metaphor by the Chiefs of Thuban Temple, alluding to the growing light of the new study group, which is slowly building towards a full temple status. We wish them all the best.
Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-75428520733555767352009-08-15T21:08:00.000-07:002009-08-26T22:40:35.887-07:00Thuban Temple

Thuban Temple is a private Golden Dawn temple in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, also servicing B.C. and the surrounding area. While older archeological theory attributes the builder to be the Pharaoh Khufu and assumes that the pyramid was built as an elaborate tomb, another perspective more popular with occult tradition states that the Great Pyramid is not a tomb at all, but a chamber used for initiation rituals of the priests and kings.
The Kings Chamber is actually physically linked to the stars Orion and <layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-5" style="background-color: Yellow;color:black;"><layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-5" style="background-color: Yellow; color: black;"><layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-4" style="background-color: Yellow; color: black;">Thuban</layer></layer></layer> through two small shafts that would have pointed upwards to the stars some 5,300 years ago, and at that time allowed the stellar light entry into the chamber. It was once the polar constellation, and its alpha star or <layer id="google-toolbar-hilite-0" style="background-color: Yellow; color: black;">Thuban</layer> was the pole star 4,800 years ago. As the millennia clicked past, Draco pulled out of alignment with the northern pole and became the serpent that chases its own tail. This may lend itself to an identification with Norse mythology, which tells of a serpent named Oroborus that bites its own tail at the edge of the world.
The Egyptian hieroglyph is that of a star-studded serpent, each shimmering scale representing a star.1 While Draco has now slumped around Polaris, the current pole star, there is a procession of the ecliptic pole, as illustrated in the diagram above. While the lion-serpent attributed to Leo and Teth has come to be commonly recognised as the Gnostic solar-path of the sun through the zodiac, Draco itself marks this same progression around the pole. Therefore, Draco is arguably also the serpent from The Universe card, where it has an expanded meaning of the entire 72 quinances of the Zodiac.

Another interpretation was that in the war of the giants, this was the dragon that was brought into battle against Minerva, the goddess of battle and learning who seized the serpent and threw it into the sky where it became fixed as a constellation.
Draco has also been taken to be the dragon killed by Cadmus with the assistance of Minerva, when he was on his quest to find his sister Europa, whom Jupiter had carried away.

In the tale of Hercules, he slays the dragon who guarded the golden apples in the garden of Hesperides, near Mount Atlas in Africa. When Juno presented the apples to Jupiter, she raised the Dragon to the heavens as the constellation to reward it for its fidelity. While the Dragon of the Herculean myth was a guard of the golden apples, this tale may well be the origin of the serpent that offered the fruit to Eve in the Garden of Eden. Finally, when the latter story is viewed from a Gnostic perspective, it is the serpent that brings humanity wisdom through its offering of the forbidden fruit.

These quaint tales involving Draco and Minerva show an important antithetical relationship between the nature of any intellectual learning, and especially that of a spiritual nature. They contrast the mystery schools which Minerva is a patroness of, and the inner Gnostic wisdom of the true most high that the serpent is but a messiah thereof. It is this that led A.E. Waite to comment on the Heirophant card that "He is the ruling power of external religion, as the High Priestess is the prevailing genius of the esoteric, withdrawn power" in his prolifically available, but scarcely understood work, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot. For that which may be taught is not the eternal truth, but a mere attempt to express ones own experience thereof.

1) The geography of the heavens, and class book of astronomy, by Elijah Hinsdale Burritt, Thomas Dick

Frater YShYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11328779411859819281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175189750641533840.post-34257756620194668112009-06-22T20:42:00.001-07:002009-09-28T21:34:13.940-07:00Music in the Outer Order
ANTONIO VIVALDI

Composed by Mozart, these hymns are as much a part of traditional Masonry as any of the regalia and ritual. I have always wanted to put the Golden Dawn rituals to music, and here are the results of my efforts.

For the Neophyte Ceremony of Reception, I have selected The Benedicite Omnia Opera to be played or sung during the circumambulations. This could have easily fit in the Path of Tav, and while it is mentioned in the Second Knowledge lecture in connection with the elemental spirits, instead I have placed it at Neophyte where the four elements play a balanced role, and of course the 0 = 0 grade is pendant to Malkuth, the sphere of the elements.

The elemental grades were far more challenging, even with my favorite composer's help. The Four Seasons are a collection of four violin concertos composed in 1723 by the great Antonio Vivaldi. It is his most widely known work and these are some of the most popular pieces of Baroque Music. These selections are attributed to the four elements and the Cardinal points of the compass by way of the "Four Prevailing Winds of Britain" system, which is of course the same order the four implements are placed on the Altar during the Neophyte Ritual. The original order of the concertos by Vivaldi is Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

In our system Winter comes first because the Zelator ritual precedes the other grades. Next is Spring at Theoricus, but then the selections for Summer and Autumn switch attribution from the sphere to the paths, thus putting Summer for the paths in Practicus, and Autumn for the Paths leading to Philosophus. This was chosen by listening to the music and meditating on the actual trumps. This captures the unique elemental duality that the Golden Dawn teaches in Practicus and Philosophus. This balance between opposites in path and sphere in these two grades is represented faithfully by this arrangement, and even moving Winter to the beginning has the astounding effect of keeping the seasons in their correct order.

The actual reception into each of the last two grades is accomplished by repeating the first movement. This decision on my part may frustrate some magicians who are inexperienced with music, but I believe it is the correct one. In my background I have played over a thousand shows, sometimes for a few hundred, sometimes for even several thousand people. It is common knowledge among musicians that the sheer power of staying in key for a whole selection of music can be incredibly moving, something that would be ruined if I mixed up some of the selections, playing summer and autumn together in one ceremony, for example. Vivaldi really knew what he was doing, so I have deferred to his legendary programming and left the sequence of the movements basically alone. Furthermore, the reprise of the first movement during the closing of Practicus and Philosophus really works in letting the energy of his music to take hold during the ceremony. I have learned that during a long evening of music a final repetition of even a single melody heard previously in the night can be such an emotional experience, it is often enough to move people to tears. Using the first movement again is the perfect effect for the entrance into a sephira and its closing ceremony.

So in closing, I would like to thank all of you for the opportunity for me be your DJ. All of these files can be found on Wiki, and I encourage each of you to sit down with a nice but inexpensive bottle of Yellowtail Shiraz from New Zealand, fan out the correct trumps and perhaps a few lineal figures, listen to these pieces in the prescribed order and marvel with me at the sheer power of Vivaldi's work.
